Beaujolais

This area due south of Burgundy, produces mainly fresh fruity wines from the Gamay grape, most of which are drunk young. The appellation Beaujolais Villages comes from hillier northern region and includes the ten Cru Beaujolais, which represent over a quarter of the wine from this area. Nearly half of all Beaujolais is sold as Nouveau and is released on the third Thursday in November, although there are signs that the thirst for this wine is steadily abating. Most wines should be drunk within three years.
